Coronavirus has affected different people in different ways. While most infected people developed mild to moderate illness and recovered without hospitalisation, others never made a comeback. Such has been the story of this deadly virus!

The concern is growing over the continuing rise in COVID-19 infections in India and around the world, and the propensity to sustain declining rates in others. The active caseload has increased to 1,80,304 which now comprises 1.61 per cent of the total infections. Everyone including the government, employers and workers are facing enormous challenges in putting
efforts to combat the pandemic and maintain safety and health at work.

The role of security guards since the inception of COVID-19 has increased manifold. They have had to manoeuvre themselves to habituate to the changing times.

On this World Health Day, keeping the pandemic in mind, it is our utmost priority to build a fairer, healthier world for everyone. The pandemic has taken many lives, pushed more people into poverty and food insecurity, social and health inequities.

The past instances have made us realise that workplaces can be of vital importance to prevent and control outbreaks. Certainly, prerequisite safety and health measures at work have a major role to play in combating the spread of the disease, while protecting workers and society at large.

The structure of Private Security in India is highly fragmented. Seems like this segment controls nearly 40 per cent of the market share, has around 250 players, and Datar Security Service Group (DSSG) is one of them!

It has been observed that many healthcare Security Teams had to increase their efforts in order to help local communities and government subsist with the pandemic on a site level.

Last year, on the occasion of World Health Day, everyone thanked the medical fraternity for their endless and selfless service in saving the lives of many. It was Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari who took to Twitter and thanked the security guards working on the frontlines who managed to keep the apartments, colonies, offices, public properties and people safe.

Here is a snippet from the same:

Not to forget the duties of security guards have doubled who are deployed outside the office premises. Besides stopping visitors and employees for verification, security guards have now been given the additional task of measuring the body temperature of each visitor and employees who enter the building. They also make sure that nobody enters the premises sans
the usage of sanitiser.

As per the analysis done by Axis Securities, a Mumbai-based firm, it has been observed that the COVID-19 outbreak has presented an unrivalled opportunity for security services in India. The Rs 1 lakh crore private security industry seems to have grown during the pandemic.

DSSG made sure their troop of security guards got their COVIC-19 vaccine shots because they are at the frontline, and hence more prone to the Virus.

DSSG also recognises that the spread of the Virus could affect employee health and business continuity. Our thoughts are definitely with those who are directly impacted by and are responding to this global public health situation. We at DSSG will continue to guide members to additional resources.

Indeed, social distancing has become the ‘norm’ worldwide, yet there are many individuals out there who are not abiding by the rules. Here comes the role of security services as they may be required to monitor areas where social gatherings take place, such as public parks and weddings halls, to prevent the violation of rules especially in those areas under local lockdown.

It is DSSG’s topmost priority to keep our workforce safe, especially those assigned to high-risk areas like healthcare facilities.
