Ganga XI put up an incredible performance to beat Yamuna XI by 45 runs in a high-octane clash walking away with the Yamuna Women’s Cricket Trophy, in New Delhi on Saturday. The sixth edition of the tournament saw the participation of women for the first time. The Trophy was organised by Indian Media Welfare Association (IMWA) President and Senior Journalist Rajiv Nishana, keeping in view the cleanliness of the Yamuna River in Delhi.

Ganga XI skipper Mamta Chaudhary won the toss and elected to bat first. They kicked off the innings with some fireworks and made 195 runs in stipulated 15 overs. Deepali and Rakhi played well and scored big runs. Chasing a mammoth total, Yamuna XI with the help of Swati and Tarsem brought the score to 150 runs before the last ball of the 15th over was bowled.

“Women can walk shoulder to shoulder with men in every sphere and can perform even better if given a chance to showcase their talent. They can keep the river Yamuna as clean as they do their homes,” said Sushma Rajiv, who captained the Yamuna XI.

Fashion designer and activist Sanjana Jon was the chief guest at the event. She applauded IMWA for taking the initiative and hoped that such events empower women to step out of their comfort zones. “Women can wield a bat as comfortably as they can roll a belan (roti roller) in the kitchen only if given an opportunity,” she added.

The players who took part in the game applauded the way the tournament was organised and conducted.

Many more sports are slated to be a part of this banner which is getting bigger and better every year. The state qualified umpires Madan and Mohit put on a great show by making the game a huge success. Syed Wajid, a senior scribe, brought ball-by-ball commentary to keep the viewers engaged.
